How to Calculate Your Age in Hijri and Gregorian (Years, Months and Days)

By Ali Muhammad · Engineer and founder of Hasebio · Last updated: 21 October 2026

Quick answer: To find your age, subtract your date of birth from today's date: years first, then months, then days. Your Hijri age is always a little higher than your Gregorian age, because a Hijri year is about 11 days shorter (354 or 355 days). A person who is 30 in Gregorian years is about 30 years and 11 months in Hijri years.

How to calculate age by hand (Gregorian)

  1. Write today's date and your date of birth as day / month / year.
  2. Subtract the days. If the birth day is larger, borrow one month (add the days of the previous month).
  3. Subtract the months. If the birth month is larger, borrow one year (add 12 months).
  4. Subtract the years.

How to calculate age in Hijri

Do the same subtraction with Hijri dates. First convert your date of birth and today's date to Hijri (Umm Al-Qura calendar), then subtract day, month and year. Hijri months have 29 or 30 days, so borrowing a month adds 29 or 30 days. Use the Hijri date converter if you only know your Gregorian birth date.

Why is my Hijri age higher?

A Gregorian year has 365 or 366 days, and a Hijri year has 354 or 355. Every Gregorian year is about 1.03 Hijri years, so the gap grows by about one Hijri year every 33 years.

Which age is used in Saudi Arabia?

  • Government salaries and many official procedures moved to the Gregorian calendar in 2016.
  • Some documents and older records still show Hijri dates of birth, so you may need both.
  • When a rule says "18 years old", check whether the authority counts in Hijri or Gregorian years, because the dates are about 7 months apart at that age.

Other things the calculator shows

  • Your age in years, months and days in both calendars at once.
  • How many days are left until your next birthday.
  • Your age on any other date, past or future (fill in the optional second date).

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my exact age?

Subtract your date of birth from today's date: days, then months, then years, borrowing a month or a year when needed. The age calculator does this for you in Gregorian and Hijri.

Why is my Hijri age more than my Gregorian age?

Because a Hijri year is about 11 days shorter, so more Hijri years pass in the same time. At age 30 the difference is about 11 months.

How many Hijri years is 18 Gregorian years?

About 18 Hijri years and 7 months.

Can I find my age on a past or future date?

Yes. Fill in the optional second date in the calculator. If you leave it empty, it uses today's date.

What if I was born on 29 February?

In years that are not leap years, the birthday is counted on 28 February.
