Profit, margin and markup
Profit per order is the selling price minus the product cost, shipping, payment fees, packaging and the ad cost per order. Margin is that profit as a share of the selling price; markup is the profit as a share of the cost. A product bought for 60 SAR and sold for 100 SAR has a 40% margin but a 67% markup, so always check which one a supplier or a course is talking about. Prices shown to customers in Saudi Arabia include 15% VAT once your store is VAT registered.
Shipping: volumetric weight
Couriers charge the higher of the real weight and the volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is usually length × width × height in centimetres divided by 5,000 (some companies use 6,000). A light but large box can cost much more than you expect, so measure your packaging before you set a free-shipping price.
Cash on delivery and ads
Cash on delivery is still popular in Saudi Arabia, but refused orders cost you shipping both ways with no sale. Track your return rate and include it in your profit. For ads, ROAS is revenue divided by ad spend; the break-even ROAS is 1 divided by your margin, so a 25% margin needs a ROAS of at least 4 just to cover the ads. Many stores aim for a customer lifetime value (LTV) of at least three times the cost to acquire that customer (CAC).
