Lots, pips and leverage in short
- One standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency; a mini lot is 10,000 and a micro lot is 1,000.
- For most currency pairs a pip is 0.0001; for pairs with the Japanese yen it is 0.01.
- In gold (XAUUSD) one lot is usually 100 ounces, so a 1 USD move in price is 100 USD per lot.
- Margin = position value ÷ leverage. Leverage makes both profits and losses bigger.
Size the trade from your risk first
Professional traders decide how much they can lose before they decide the lot size. Many risk 1–2% of the account on one trade. With a 10,000 USD account, 1% risk and a 50-pip stop loss, the risk is 100 USD, which is 2 USD a pip, or 0.2 lots on EUR/USD. The lot size calculator does this for you in seconds.
Pivot points and Fibonacci
The classic pivot point is (high + low + close) ÷ 3 from the previous day; support and resistance levels are worked out from it. Fibonacci retracements mark 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8% and 78.6% of a move. They are reference levels, not signals.
These calculators are for planning and learning. Trading with leverage carries a high risk of loss. In Saudi Arabia, use a broker licensed by the Capital Market Authority (CMA), and remember that the zakat on gold you own is a different matter from trading gold.
