Good to know

Classic pivot: P = (high + low + close) ÷ 3, R1 = 2P − low, S1 = 2P − high. Fibonacci retracements use 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8% and 78.6% of the swing, extensions use 127.2%, 161.8%, 200% and 261.8%, and Fibonacci pivots use 38.2%, 61.8% and 100% of the range. These are common trader tools, not predictions: price can ignore them.

Frequently asked questions

What are pivot points?

They are levels worked out from the previous period's high, low and close that traders watch as possible support and resistance. P is the central pivot, R levels are above it and S levels below.

What is the difference between classic and Fibonacci pivots?

The central pivot is the same. Classic pivots use the range in their own formulas (for example R2 = P + range), while Fibonacci pivots use 38.2%, 61.8% and 100% of the range.

Which period should I use?

Use the high, low and close of the previous day for daily levels, the previous week for weekly levels, and so on. The tool does not know your chart, so you enter the numbers.

How do I pick the swing for Fibonacci levels?

Choose the swing high and swing low of the move you are studying and the direction of that move. Retracements show where the price may pull back to, extensions where it may go beyond.

What are the extension levels?

They project the move beyond its end, at 127.2%, 161.8%, 200% and 261.8% of the swing measured from its start.

Do these levels work?

They are common tools, and many traders watch the same levels, but price can ignore them. They are not predictions.
