Good to know

Pip value = pip size × contract size × value of the quote currency in your account currency. When your account is in the quote currency (for example USD for EUR/USD) the rate is 1.

Risk warning

Trading currencies, gold and CFDs with leverage is high risk. You can lose all of your deposit and, depending on your broker, more. This tool is for calculation and learning only. It is not investment advice or a recommendation to trade. Prices, leverage, fees, spreads and pip values differ between brokers, so check your licensed broker's own figures before any trade.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pip?

A pip is the usual small step of a forex price: 0.0001 for most pairs and 0.01 for pairs with the Japanese yen as the quote currency. Some brokers show a tenth of a pip as well.

How is pip value worked out?

Pip value = pip size × contract size × the value of the quote currency in your account currency. For EUR/USD on a USD account with 1 standard lot, one pip is 10 dollars.

Why do I need to enter a rate?

When the quote currency is not your account currency, the pip is worth an amount in another currency, and it must be converted. You enter the rate from your platform.

What if my broker uses 5-digit prices?

Brokers that show a fifth decimal call it a pipette. A pip is still 0.0001. If your broker defines a pip differently, type its size in the pip size box.

What is the value for a mini or micro lot?

A mini lot (0.1) is a tenth of the standard value and a micro lot (0.01) a hundredth. The tool shows all three.

Can I use it for gold or indices?

For gold use the Gold XAUUSD calculator, which works by price distance. Pip rules for indices and other products differ by broker, so check your broker.
