Margin & Leverage Calculator

See how much margin a trade needs, how big the position really is, and how close your account is to a margin call. Works for forex pairs and gold.

Your position

3-letter code, for example USD or SAR.

Enter today's exchange rate from your platform. If it is shown the other way round (USD/EUR), enter 1 divided by it. We do not show live rates.

A standard lot is usually 100,000 units. Check your broker.

Enter 100 for 1:100. Your broker sets this.

USD

Add it to see free margin, margin level and the most lots you could open. The balance is used as your equity. Open profit or loss, and margin already used by your other open positions, are not included.

For gold, choose "Other pair", type XAU/USD, set the contract size to your broker's ounces per lot and enter the gold price as the value of 1 XAU.

Result

Enter the lots and leverage to see the margin. If the first (base) currency of the pair is not your account currency, also enter its exchange rate.

Good to know

Margin = lots × contract size × value of the base currency in your account currency ÷ leverage. The maximum leverage and the margin-call level are set by your broker, and profits or losses on open trades change your free margin.

Risk warning

Trading currencies, gold and CFDs with leverage is high risk. You can lose all of your deposit and, depending on your broker, more. This tool is for calculation and learning only. It is not investment advice or a recommendation to trade. Prices, leverage, fees, spreads and pip values differ between brokers, so check your licensed broker's own figures before any trade.

Frequently asked questions

What is margin?

Margin is the money your broker holds from your account to keep a leveraged trade open. It is not a fee, and it is released when the trade closes.

What is leverage?

Leverage lets you open a position larger than your balance. With 1:100, 1,000 dollars of margin can open a position worth 100,000 dollars.

What are margin level and margin call?

Margin level is your equity divided by the margin in use. If it falls below a level set by your broker, you may get a margin call or the broker may close trades. The level differs between brokers.

What is real leverage?

It is the position value divided by your balance. A broker may offer 1:100 but if your position is only twice your balance, your real leverage is 2 to 1.

Does higher leverage lower my risk?

No. Leverage lets you open a bigger position with less margin, and your gains and losses depend on the size of the position. Higher leverage can make a loss larger.

How do I use it for gold?

Choose “Other pair”, type XAU/USD, set the contract size to the ounces per lot of your broker and enter the gold price as the value of 1 XAU in your account currency.
