pips

Distance from your entry to your stop loss, in pips.

3-letter code, for example USD or SAR.

Leave blank for the usual size: 0.01 for yen pairs, otherwise 0.0001. Change it if your broker uses another size.

A standard lot is usually 100,000 units. Check your broker.

Usually 0.01 (micro lot). The result is rounded down to this step so you never risk more than planned.

Result

Enter your balance, risk, stop loss and account currency to see the lot size. If your account currency is not the second (quote) currency of the pair, also enter the exchange rate.

Good to know

Lots = risk amount ÷ (stop loss in pips × pip value per lot). Spread, commission, slippage and swap are not included, so a real loss can be larger than the planned risk.

Risk warning

Trading currencies, gold and CFDs with leverage is high risk. You can lose all of your deposit and, depending on your broker, more. This tool is for calculation and learning only. It is not investment advice or a recommendation to trade. Prices, leverage, fees, spreads and pip values differ between brokers, so check your licensed broker's own figures before any trade.

Frequently asked questions

What is a lot?

A lot is the size of a forex trade. A standard lot is usually 100,000 units of the base currency, a mini lot 10,000 and a micro lot 1,000. Your broker's contract may differ, so check it.

How is the lot size calculated?

First the amount you want to risk (balance × risk %). Then lots = risk amount ÷ (stop loss in pips × value of one pip for one lot).

Why is the lot rounded down?

Brokers allow only certain steps, such as 0.01. Rounding down means the loss calculated at your stop loss is never more than the amount you chose.

My account is not in the quote currency. What do I enter?

Enter how much one unit of the quote currency is worth in your account currency, from your platform. If your platform shows it the other way round, enter 1 divided by that number.

How much should I risk per trade?

There is no single right answer. Many traders choose a small share of their balance per trade, often 1% to 2%, so that a run of losses does not empty the account. This is a common habit, not advice.

Does the result include spread and commission?

No. Spread, commission, swap and slippage can make the real loss larger than the planned risk.
