Good to know

Volumetric weight = length × width × height (cm) ÷ divisor. A light but bulky box is charged by size, not by its real weight. Each courier has its own divisor, rounding and price list, which are not included here.

About this calculator

Compare volumetric and actual weight to see which one your courier charges for. Enter the box size in cm to get the chargeable weight for shipping.

Example: a 50 × 40 × 30 cm box of 8 kg

With a divisor of 5000 the volumetric weight is 12 kg, which is more than 8 kg, so you are charged for 12 kg.

Frequently asked questions

What is volumetric weight?

It is a weight worked out from the size of the box, not from what it weighs. Couriers use it because a large light box takes as much space in a vehicle as a heavy one.

What is the formula?

Length × width × height in centimetres, divided by the divisor. For a 50 × 40 × 30 cm box and a divisor of 5000, the volumetric weight is 12 kg.

Which divisor should I use?

The one your courier uses. 5000 is common, but some couriers use 4000 or 6000, and some use other rules. Check your courier's terms.

Which weight do I pay for?

The bigger of the actual weight and the volumetric weight. The tool shows which one is higher.

Why is there a rounding option?

Some couriers charge in steps, such as rounding up to 0.5 kg or 1 kg. Choose the step your courier uses. If you are not sure, leave it on no rounding.

How can I lower the shipping weight?

Use a box that fits the product closely and remove empty space. Even a few centimetres off each side cuts the volumetric weight noticeably.
