How to Calculate Volumetric Weight for Shipping (DHL, Aramex, SMSA)
Quick answer: Volumetric weight (kg) = length × width × height (cm) ÷ 5000 for DHL Express and most international express services. The courier charges the higher of the actual weight and the volumetric weight. This is called the chargeable weight.
Why couriers use volumetric weight
A big light box takes as much space in a plane or van as a heavy one. So couriers turn the box size into a weight. If your parcel is light but bulky, you pay for its size, not its real weight.
The formula, step by step
- Measure the box in centimeters: length, width and height, at the widest points.
- Multiply them: L × W × H.
- Divide by the courier's divisor (5000 for DHL Express).
- Compare with the actual weight on a scale. The higher number is what you pay for.
Worked examples (divisor 5000)
| Box (cm) | Actual weight | Volumetric weight | Chargeable weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 × 40 × 30 | 5 kg | 60,000 ÷ 5000 = 12 kg | 12 kg |
| 30 × 20 × 10 | 2 kg | 6,000 ÷ 5000 = 1.2 kg | 2 kg |
| 40 × 30 × 20 | 3 kg | 24,000 ÷ 5000 = 4.8 kg | 4.8 kg |
| 60 × 50 × 40 | 10 kg | 120,000 ÷ 5000 = 24 kg | 24 kg |
Which divisor does each courier use?
- DHL Express: 5000 (cm and kg), as stated by DHL.
- Aramex, SMSA and other couriers: the divisor depends on the service (international express, domestic, freight). Many express services use 5000, while some domestic or economy services use a different number such as 4000 or 6000.
- Always check the divisor in your rate card or account. A smaller divisor gives a higher weight.
- In inches and pounds, the common express formula is L × W × H (inches) ÷ 139.
Couriers usually round the chargeable weight up, often to the next 0.5 kg. Check your courier's rounding rule.
How to pay less for shipping
- Use the smallest box that fits the product safely. A few centimeters on each side can add kilos.
- Avoid large boxes filled with air or padding.
- For soft items like clothes, use poly mailers instead of boxes.
- For online stores, add the chargeable weight to your product cost. See the product profit calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate volumetric weight?
Multiply length × width × height in cm and divide by the courier's divisor. For DHL Express the divisor is 5000.
What is chargeable weight?
The higher of the actual weight and the volumetric weight. The courier bills you on this number.
What is the volumetric weight of a 50 × 40 × 30 cm box?
50 × 40 × 30 ÷ 5000 = 12 kg with the 5000 divisor.
Does SMSA or Aramex use 5000?
It depends on the service. Many express services use 5000, but check the divisor on your rate card.
Why is my shipping bill higher than the parcel weight?
Because the box was bulky, so the volumetric weight was higher than the real weight.
